Daniel 12: The last days - It was the worst, and best, of times!

Bible Study Series: Daniel, Babylon and the End Times

Daniel 12 Lesson: The last days - It was the worst, and best, of times!

by I Gordon

Bible study lesson Daniel 12 being both the worst and best of timesCharles Dickens began 'A tale of two cities' by writing 'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness... it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.' Had he been reading Daniel 12? : ) Not at all likely, but this is the feeling I get from this chapter. It starts by speaking of 'a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations' yet on the other side of the coin, this culminates in the best ever event - the return of the true world leader, Jesus Christ!

So I have swapped the descriptions around and called this study 'Last days: It was the worst, and best of times' for ultimately it all ends well! As we explore this, the 12th and final chapter in the book of Daniel, we'll focus on:

  • The coming time that is said to be unprecedented: It will be the worst of times, yet end with salvation!
  • The resurrection still to come - how is that both the best and worst of times depending on who you are?
  • The two prophetic signs of the end - how can they look so promising and yet dark at the same time?
  • The one key prophecy that has to happen to the nation of Israel to bring about the end... And again it's not good, yet ends perfectly!
  • The application - what can we learn from what the angel told Daniel personally? And how does it apply to both believers and unbelievers alike?

Now any focus on Bible prophecy and things to come should, if taught correctly, get us thinking again about eternal matters. So I hope that is the case here and may it draw us closer to the Lord in the here and now! Ok, let's kick it off.

The coming unequaled time of distress... that leads to salvation!

Dan 12:1 At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people--everyone whose name is found written in the book--will be delivered.

Daniel 12 starts with a statement that is pretty full on. Daniel is told that the coming tribulation and rise of the Antichrist will lead to a time of unequalled distress not seen since the foundation of the world. Now there have been some pretty horrific times in human history so we shouldn't just read over this statement too quickly. Our grandparents, and maybe even our parents, remember World War 2. They remember the holocaust. My own mother, who grew up in England, still remembers the German planes flying over and bombing England when she was a very young child. She remembers the sirens and everyone going to the safest spots they had in their homes. For the Jews especially, WWII was the worst time in their history where 6 million were killed in the holocaust - simply for being Jewish. But as terrible as that time was, it will be eclipsed by what is coming at the end of this age. It will be an unprecedented time. Jesus of course spoke about this same period saying:

Matthew 24:21-22 "For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will. (22) "Unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.

The prophet Jeremiah also spoke of this time, but also note the salvation that he ends on:

Jeremiah 30:6-7 Ask now, and see, Whether a man is ever in labor with child? So why do I see every man with his hands on his loins Like a woman in labor, And all faces turned pale? (7) Alas! For that day is great, So that none is like it; And it is the time of Jacob's trouble, But he shall be saved out of it.

While the whole world will be in upheaval during this time, this time of distress will be even more intensified for the nation of Israel. And yet we find something else rather remarkable from Daniel's prophecy...Israel has a protector of the highest order! We read in Daniel 10, and again here, that the archangel Michael is the one who has been given the role of protecting the nation of Israel! And he is going to 'stand up' or 'arise' at this time.

Michael the Archangel
  • Michael means 'who is like God?'
  • As mentioned, he is the only Archangel spoken of in scripture (Jude 1:9)
  • He is the prince of Israel, guarding that nation
  • Michael is mentioned 5 times in scripture and each time it is in the context of conflict and warfare
    • Daniel 10:13 – Describes Michael as "one of the chief princes" who helps a messenger angel in spiritual warfare.
    • Daniel 10:21 – Refers to Michael as "your prince," indicating his role in protecting Israel.
    • Daniel 12:1 – States that Michael will stand up during the Tribulation, protecting God's people.
    • Jude 1:9 – Sees Michael contending with the devil over the body of Moses.
    • Revelation 12:7 – Speaks of Michael and his angels fighting against Satan and his forces in a heavenly battle... and he wins, casting Satan out of heaven!
  • "Since Michael is called the archangel (Jud 1:9), he is Satan's true opposite. Satan is not the opposite of Jesus; he is the opposite of Michael, this high-ranking angel." - Pastor David Guzik
  • That Michael would 'stand up' or 'arise' at this coming time of great tribulation suggests that it is time for action once again. It may be a poor illustration but it reminds me of a guard dog that may look like it is sleeping but with the slightest unusual sound it's ears are alert, it's eyes open, and if another odd sound happens it is on its feet ready for action!

And though the time of distress and tribulation will be unequalled, yet all of Daniel's people, the Jews, whose names are written in the book will be delivered. That is why it is the worst of times and also the best of times. As the Jeremiah passage said above, 'it is the time of Jacob's trouble - yet he shall be saved out of it!' However the cost will be great. It has been said that 1/3 of all Jews were killed in Hitler's holocaust, yet scripture tells us that 2/3 will perish in the coming holocaust, leaving a 1/3 remnant to be brought through the fire and refined (Zech 13:8-9)1. This is all the more sobering as we look at the state of the world and the incredible rise, once again, of anti-Semitism that has occurred since the invasion of Israel on Oct 7 2023 by Hamas and the subsequent wars in Gaza and Iran. So many, the world over, have no idea that their hatred of the Jews is motivated by, and fits perfectly into, Satan's plans for the last days!

The best and worst of the resurrection

Dan 12:2-3  Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.  (3)  Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.

Daniel is then given a glimpse of the future resurrection. The importance of this life is seen in the angel's words saying 'And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.'  Firstly, note that there is a resurrection. It is a simple point but death is not the end. Though this body grows old and dies, our soul does not . We always think of ourselves in terms of our body yet that is just the shell that contains the real person. C.S Lewis said it well when he said:

'You do not have a soul. You are a soul. You have a body.'
C.S Lewis

Book of Daniel Bible Study Commentary Chapter 12The resurrection is a resurrection of the body. Now at the resurrection some will be raised to everlasting life... yet others to everlasting contempt and shame. Again it will be the best and worst of times depending on your life today. Some will be raised to a shame and punishment that will last forever. That is the simple cold hard truth of the matter though it is hard to think about. Because we don't like the thought of it, some change what the Bible says to incorporate the wrong theories of 'Annihilation' or 'Universal Salvation' but we have to stick by what the word says.2

But note also the beauty of the next verse: 'And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.'  Those that walk in the ways of God and those who help others to find and walk that path shall shine! Forever! What a great promise and a great motivation to walk in those ways! What you do now impacts eternity. It impacts your rewards. It impacts your inheritance. The Bible says 'He who wins souls is wise'. They will be eternally grateful and you will be rewarded accordingly.

Knowledge will increase - a good thing?

Dan 12:4 "But as for you, Daniel, conceal these words and seal up the book until the end of time; many will go back and forth, and knowledge will increase."

Verse 4 gives additional prophetic insight into the last days. Daniel is instructed to seal the words of the scroll. I believe this means that the words of this prophecy were to be protected until the time of the end when their words will become invaluable to those who are seeing the fulfilment of its words.

Two key prophecies in Daniel 12

Two important prophecies are spoken of the end times in this passage:

  1. Many will go here and there
  2. Knowledge will increase.

Scholars debate whether this specifically concerns the study of prophecy or knowledge and travel in general. I have no problem applying it to both. A vast increase in knowledge of Bible prophecy has, and is, occurring. There is so much information and knowledge now available and this will continue as we approach the coming of the Lord. Unfortunately, at the same time you have a lot of mainline and even apostate Churches, that won't go near Bible prophecy! And if we take this prophecy generally, we have seen that both travel and knowledge have exploded in our generation.

As an illustration, since the dawn of time to the turn of the nineteenth century men and women travelled no faster than a horse could run. Sir Isaac Newton wrote in 1680 about Daniel 12:4 saying - "Personally I cannot help but believe that these refer to the end of the times. Men will travel from country to country in an unprecedented manner. There may be some inventions which will enable people to travel much more quickly than they do now."  Newton even went on to say people might travel in these inventions at speeds that exceed 40 miles per hour! 80 years later, the French Atheist philosopher Voltaire was on the scene and said to a friend, "It took twelve ignorant fishermen to establish Christianity; I will show the world how one Frenchman can destroy it." And upon reading what Newton wrote, Voltaire stated: "See what a fool Christianity makes of an otherwise brilliant man! A scientist like Newton actually writes that man may travel at a rate of 40 mph, has he forgotten that if a man would travel at this rate he would be suffocated? His heart would stand still." As a side note twenty-five years after Voltaire died, his home was purchased by the Geneva Bible Society and became a Bible storage building, and his printing press was used to print an entire edition of the Bible! Well, even Newton, as great as he was, couldn't see that one day man would fly in planes able to break the sound barrier, travel to the moon and explore the solar system.

And you have probably used some of the many AI systems that are rapidly being embedded into operating systems and websites. AI truly is remarkable and is going to forever change this world as it is incorporated into every area. And that is not necessarily always in a good way... but that is another story! AI is already being incorporated into healthcare, finance. education, manufacturing, warfare, entertainment and so many other fields. Here are 10 areas where knowledge and technology are combining to perform tasks previously unthought of. And yes, it's not just me saying it... AI told me!3 : )

  1. AI is learning to predict diseases before symptoms appear. Using vast amounts of medical data, AI algorithms can spot early signs of conditions like Alzheimer's or cancer, sometimes years in advance.
  2. Soft robots can navigate tight spaces like living creatures. Engineers are designing robots that mimic the flexibility of octopuses, allowing them to squeeze through cracks and assist in rescue missions or surgeries.
  3. Smart contact lenses with augmented reality displays exist. Researchers are developing lenses that could project notifications, translations, or even health data directly into your field of vision.
  4. 3D printing is revolutionizing medicine. Scientists can print custom prosthetics, bones, and even living tissues, offering personalized treatments and faster recoveries.
  5. Drones powered by AI can plant trees faster than humans. Some companies are deploying fleets of drones to rapidly reforest areas affected by deforestation, potentially planting billions of trees in years instead of decades.
  6. Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) allow people to control devices with their thoughts. Companies are developing implants that let users move cursors, type words, or even control robotic limbs using brain signals alone.
  7. AI can now generate realistic voices and faces that don’t exist. Deepfake technology allows computers to create incredibly convincing digital personas—raising concerns about misinformation and identity security.
  8. Solar panels can generate electricity at night. Innovations in thermoradiative technology allow special cells to capture infrared emissions from Earth's surface after sunset.
  9. Wireless electricity is becoming feasible. Scientists are developing ways to transmit power over distances without cables, opening possibilities for more efficient charging and safer infrastructure.
  10. Nanobots could fight diseases inside the human body. Tiny robotic machines are being researched to deliver medicine precisely where it’s needed, and even repair damaged tissues from the inside.

From a technological perspective, these truly are amazing times. For example, look at the following on how long it takes for knowledge to double:4

  • Historically, human knowledge approximately doubled every century until 1900, then every 25 years by the middle of the 20th century.
  • By 1982, Buckminster Fuller estimated that knowledge was doubling every 13 months.
  • Some sources suggest that knowledge is doubling every 12 hours, and some even predict that this rate will continue to increase.

So as someone has once said (which I like!)...

'By the time it takes me to get to where it's at, I'm where it was.'
Someone : )

Some of these advances are mind boggling and truly amazing. In one sense we can say it is the best of times. Yet on another, we wonder where it will end and how long God will allow it to continue for mankind has a habit of corrupting everything and not always using technological advances for good! And you'll remember that at the tower of Babel, when man tried to unite in rebellion against God, the Lord stepped in to stop their plans! Well, the Bible tells us where it is heading, and another intervention is definitely planned! So let's read more on this in Daniel.

The key event: The shattering of the holy people's power

Dan 12:5-7 Then I, Daniel, looked, and there before me stood two others, one on this bank of the river and one on the opposite bank. (6) One of them said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, "How long will it be before these astonishing things are fulfilled?" (7) The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard him swear by him who lives forever, saying, "It will be for a time, times and half a time. When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed."

In this part of the vision, Daniel again sees the 'man clothed in linen' which you may remember from Daniel 10:5. While there are some difficulties involved in the text, this 'man' certainly resembles the description of Jesus given in Revelation 1 and could well be the Lord. Another asks the man in linen how long it will be until the end of this time of unrivalled distress. Now that is a good question don't you think? If you were in this period of time one of the first things you'd want to know is how long will this last? In his answer the man in linen not only gives us the exact time frame for this period of tribulation but also a key requirement that must occur before the end can come.

The length of this period is said to be 'a time, times, and half a time.' Now, if you have got a good memory you'll note that we have come across this before in Dan 7:25. It is a reference to the last 3 1/2 years of Daniel's 70th 'seven'. But look also at the key requirement for this time period to end for this is very telling... The man in linen says that 'when the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed.' The holy people in this context are Daniel's people, the Jews. That mighty, proud, resilient race must be brought to their knees. It will be the worst of times, but it is also the best of times! You see through this 'shattering' they will be brought to the place where they will acknowledge their offense in rejecting Jesus as their Messiah and cry out for Him to return and save them! And that, my friends, is a good thing!

Israel is brought to its knees

As an Old Testament type, do you remember Jacob's night of wrestling with the angel of the Lord in Gen 32:22-32? At the end of the night, God touched his hip to weaken him and changed his name to Israel. It is all a picture of what will happen to the nation that came from Jacob in the tribulation. As strong as they are naturally, and God has blessed them to make them incredibly strong, He will also weaken them to the point where their strength is shattered. Look at these key passages that speak of what must occur before Jesus returns to save them:

Hos 5:15-6:3 Then I will go back to my place until they admit their guilt. And they will seek my face; in their misery they will earnestly seek me." (6:1) Come, let us return to the LORD. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds. (2) After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence. (3) Let us acknowledge the LORD; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth."

Mat 23:37-39 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. (38) Look, your house is left to you desolate. (39) For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.' "

The Jewish nation will be brought to the place where they will acknowledge their guilt and cry out for their Messiah to return. But again, this won't be an easy process! They are naturally incredibly able and because of their history of persecution that often rely upon their own wisdom and strength to survive. But the odds at the end of the age will be totally overwhelming for every nation shall come against Israel (Zech 14:1-2). But when pushed to the very edge of annihilation, they shall cry out for their Messiah Jesus... And their Messiah, the lion from the tribe of Judah, shall come!

A couple more time periods just to complicate matters!

Dan 12:8-12 I heard, but I did not understand. So I asked, "My lord, what will the outcome of all this be?" (9) He replied, "Go your way, Daniel, because the words are closed up and sealed until the time of the end. (10) Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand. (11) From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. (12) Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1,335 days.

Now Daniel doesn't fully understand what he is being told. Which is not an uncommon reaction to Bible prophecy!5 But he is essentially told that for him personally it doesn't matter for these prophecies are for the time of the end and those that are wise and live at that time will understand. So note that phrase given - 'None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand'. We live in the day when we should understand. We should be wise and apply ourselves to understand. It doesn't mean that you will grasp everything that has been written. But it does mean that you are wise enough to see the signs of the times and the time of the signs. It means you are wise enough to know the season in which you live. And most importantly, it means that you are wise enough to live in a way that shows that you know the season in which we live!

Now two more time frames are thrown into the pot in these verses. You'll see above that from the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away and the abomination of desolation is set up (which is right in the middle of the Tribulation), there shall be 1,290 days. But to be a little more cryptic the next sentence tells us that 'blessed is he who makes the 1,335 days!' So let's try to unravel this prophetic knot!

  • 1290 days: The first period mentioned is in relation to the desecration and God's judgment. It is telling us from the point of time when the Antichrist puts himself into the rebuilt temple and declares himself to be God until the time that judgment is complete will be 1,290 days. We know that Jesus returns after 1,260 days so there is a further 30 day period following His return where the nations will be judged for their part in the persecution of God's people.6 By the end of that time, judgment will be complete.
  • 1335 days: The second time frame of 1335 days involves a blessing. 'Blessed is he that makes it to the 1335 days!' This time period has the same starting point but the extra 45 day period (from the 1290 days) will likely be the time until the Messianic Kingdom officially begins. The Old Testament and Tribulation saints will be raised from the dead before this time. So anyone who makes it to this time truly is blessed for they have access to Jesus' Kingdom on earth, where the curse will be removed and the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea! (Hab 2:14).

Application - So how are we to live?

Daniel 12:13 'As for you, go your way till the end. You will rest, and then at the end of the days you will rise to receive your allotted inheritance.'

I have left these three verses for last because I feel they help us focus on eternal matters the best. Verse 13 contains things that are true of all mankind and other things that are only true of some. Let's break the verse down a little:

Application on Daniel 12:13

That which is true of all mankind...

  • Go your way - We all go our own way. Everyone in this world chooses the way in which they will go. For some, that way is God's way. Daniel was one of these. He could be told to go his own way because his way was God's way! Others do not walk in God's way but choose a broader wider road.
  • Till the end - We all come to an end... all of mankind reaches its end. All will die, even if we sometimes think that we are bulletproof, and it can often occur quicker than we expect!
  • You will rise - We (believers and unbelievers) will all rise from the dead. For some it is a resurrection unto life. For others it is a resurrection unto judgement.

That which is only true of believers...

  • You will rest - Daniel was promised that at the end of his life he would enter into rest. That is also true of all those who are 'in Christ' and have found salvation through Jesus. But to those who did not walk in God's way 'there is no rest for the wicked' as the scripture says. They will only experience the consequences of judgement for a life lived in rebellion to the provision of salvation God made available in Christ. Scary proposition.
  • You will receive your allotted inheritance - God's rewards and inheritance are for all those 'in Christ' but their fullness and measure is in accordance with our faithful work and dedication to God's calling in this life.

Conclusion

As we conclude, what have we seen? We have seen that the worst of all times is still ahead... but also the best! God is directing the affairs on this planet to their ultimate conclusion. We live in crazy days where the amount of change is hard to keep up with. Knowledge, through the advancements that come with AI, is exponentially increasing as predicted back here in Daniel 2500 years ago! And the events surrounding Israel are all lining up as prophesied. The power of the Holy people must be broken... but it is not to leave them broken but to bring them into the fulfillment of the ages - the salvation of the Jewish nation and return of their Messiah!

And for you and me today, this chapter has also reminded us of the coming resurrection. That our life here and now matters for all of eternity! May we be among those that the angel said to Daniel would 'be wise' and would shine for all eternity!7 May we use this time to lead others to righteousness. You see, all of the Bible writers, when thinking of the last days or eternal matters, always brought it back to how it should influence how we live today.

What type of people should we be in view of these things?
  • John said it like this: 'Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.  (3)  Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure.' (1Jn 3:2-3)
  • Peter, when thinking of the end of the age said it like this: 'Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.' (2Pe 3:11-12)
  • The Apostle Paul spent a whole chapter talking about the resurrection to come in 1 Cor 15, but closed with these words:  'Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.' (1 Cor 15:58)

And that is the truth. Our choices and labor in the Lord are never in vain. If we believe that this life is a rehearsal for the reality that is to come, then our lives should reflect that now. We should abound in God's work as He leads. And even if little or no fruit is seen in this life, none of it is wasted for God sees and records all. So may we be like Daniel who at a ripe old age could look back over a faithful life and pass from this life, entering into his rest knowing that the best is still yet to come.

So there ends this incredible book. We see that it is more relevant than ever as the world players position themselves in alignment with what Daniel prophesied must take place in the last days. I trust it has been a blessing for you and a motivation to walk closely with the soon coming King of kings!

God bless!

FOOTNOTES

  1. This 'remnant' that God always has among the Jews equates to the 'All Israel' that Paul said would be saved at the end of the age after God turns again to save that nation - His covenant people. This will occur after the church is raptured, when the full number of the gentiles have come into the Church. It is then that God turns again to fulfill His promises to the nation of Israel as a whole. As previously mentioned Zechariah tells us that 1/3 of the Jews will be brought through this terrible time and are saved (Zech 13:8-9).

  2. Do not let people try to convince you that the Bible teaches Universal salvation (that everyone gets saved in the end) or in Annihilation (that the wicked are annihilated in the lake of fire and don't exist anymore). Both theories have far more to do with what a person would like to believe than what the Bible actually teaches. Daniel talks about everlasting life and everlasting shame. The same word is used for the length of time (eternal, without end) that both experience. Jesus said the same thing in Matt 25:46. The contempt of the wicked will last just as long as the eternal life of the righteous does.

  3. A quick AI question on where AI is advancing also gives the following response:

    • Healthcare – AI-powered diagnostics, robotic surgeries, and drug discovery are transforming patient care and medical research.
    • Finance – AI is optimizing fraud detection, algorithmic trading, personalized banking, and risk assessment.
    • Transportation – Self-driving cars, AI-powered traffic management, and logistics optimization are reshaping mobility and supply chains.
    • Education – AI-driven tutoring systems, personalized learning experiences, and automated grading are enhancing the way we learn.
    • Retail – Smart recommendation engines, AI-powered customer service, and inventory management are improving shopping experiences.
    • Manufacturing – AI-driven automation, predictive maintenance, and quality control are streamlining production processes.
    • Entertainment – AI-generated music, movies, virtual influencers, and personalized content recommendations are changing how we consume media.
    • Agriculture – AI-powered precision farming, predictive analytics for crop health, and autonomous machinery are boosting food production.
    • Cybersecurity – AI is enhancing threat detection, real-time fraud prevention, and automated security responses.
    • Warfare – AI-driven drones and robotic systems are being used. AI-powered systems process information from satellites, drones, and ground sensors to detect threats and make predictive analysis.

  4. In terms of the knowledge and information explosion, consider the following facts. Well, they were facts... by the time you read this they will be way out of date!

    • With the Google search engine, the 'Daily' searches for 2025 are projected to be 13.6 billion for 2025. This translates to almost 5 trillion searches per year. Or, to put it in a number more conceivable, it is 158,548 per second!
    • Estimates suggest that a new book is published every eight seconds, or nearly 11,000 per day.
    • Globally, an estimated 23 billion text messages are sent each day, which translates to about 270,000 texts every second.
    • It has been estimated that 1 week of the New York Times contains more information than the average person in the 18th Century would come across in their lifetime.

  5. Daniel is certainly not going to be the last person to be confused by the prophecies he was given! They have led to all sorts of interpretations over the years since they were given. Many of the cults that have arisen had a strong emphasis around failed interpretations on prophecy. But it is also true that in the last days knowledge will increase and as the time period spoken about comes more into view, the words of Daniel also become clearer.

  6. Jesus referred to this as the judgement of the sheep and the goats. See Matt 25:31-46. The same judgement is referred to by Joel in chapter 3:1-14.

  7. As we read earlier in Daniel, 'Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.' There seems to be a literal aspect to this 'shining'. In the book of Revelation, when John saw Jesus in glory, he said that His face 'shone like the sun in all its strength'. The same description is given on the Mount of Transfiguration which is a glimpse of the Kingdom age still to come (Matt 17:2). And God's glory shall shine through us, His followers, as well because when we see Jesus we shall be like Him. When writing about the resurrection, Paul said that there is one glory of the sun, another of the moon and all of the stars differ in glory from each other. Then he said that this is how it is in the resurrection.
