Bible Studies on Wisdom and Folly
The Fall of Wisdom
by I Gordon
↩ As to where wisdom can be found, sometimes it is in the mouth of babes! Consider the following answers given by young children asked to pass on some words of wisdom that they had learned... (and yeah, they only made it into this study 'cos they cracked me up!)
When your dad is mad and asks you 'Do I look stupid?' don't answer
Never tell your mum her diet's not working
Never ask your 3-year old brother to hold your tomato
If your sister hits you, don't hit her back. They always catch the second person
You can't trust dogs to watch your food
When your mum is mad at your dad, don't let her brush your hair
Never hold a dust buster and a cat at the same time
You can't hide a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk
If you want a kitten, start out by asking for a horse
No matter how hard you try, you can't baptize a cat.
↩ Bible prophecy foretold that there would be an explosion in knowledge in the last days. The book of Daniel states: 'But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.' (Dan 12:4) And yet, you will search in vain to find the Bible saying that wisdom shall increase! Unfortunately, as knowledge has increased, true wisdom has decreased!
↩ The fear of the Lord is a reverential fear that puts God and His ways first. And God honours the man that honours Him. He 'gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning' as it says in Daniel 2:21. It's not that we have to have great wisdom to begin with though. We only have to be wise enough to put Him first and look to Him to receive more wisdom! This is the fear of God. If you fear man, you are overly concerned what he thinks about you so that it governs your actions - you act taking into account what others are thinking and saying about you. The fear of God is the same - you are concerned about what God thinks and it governs your actions so you act in accordance to what God would have you do.
↩ Mmmm... you're probably going to ask what the seven pillars are aren't you? I know I certainly thought about that question when I read the passage. In William MacDonald's commentary he states that the seven pillars that form the basis of Wisdom's house could be interpreted as the seven spirits of God mentioned in Isaiah 11. Or possibly, it could be the seven fold description of wisdom described in James 3:17 'But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure (1). It is also peace loving (2), gentle at all times (3), and willing to yield to others (4). It is full of mercy and good deeds (5). It shows no partiality (6) and is always sincere. (7)'
↩ You really do have to ask yourself why don't you? Why is there so much folly around? Why is folly having her way when wisdom also cries out? I will address this in the 2nd study - The Rise of Folly. But in the mean time, have a nosey at Romans chapter 1:18-31. You would do well to really read and think about these verses. They are really important in this age in which we live. You see, even in creation itself, wisdom cries out that there is a God. Anyone who is not listening to folly can see and understand that this wonderful creation demands a creator! But those that would rather choose to listen to folly suppress the truth and incur the wrath of God - The wrath of abandonment!
There is also another reason why Folly has taken over. For wisdom has been placed in a certain location where the majority in this world will not humble themselves enough to look. That place, is actually a person. 'My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge .'
↩ You hear so much about having to 'be relevant' to today's society like with the latest 'emergent church' stuff. But invariably, all this boils down to is watering down the Word of God, the claims of Christ, and the importance of truth. To this watered down recipe for disaster, they add plenty of sugar in the form of 'entertainment' to keep people coming back. Can you really imagine Jesus or the Apostles trying to entertain people to keep them happy? Folly, folly, folly. She's dumb, but she's loud and she's everywhere.
The latest piece of folly that I have heard as I wrote this study
comes from 'Arnie the Governator'. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger
signed a new "anti-discrimination" bill into law, effectively
making terms like "mom" and dad" obsolete. According to World
Congress of Families Global Coordinator Allan Carlson, "It will
prohibit anything that suggests that the natural family - a man and
a woman, married, with children - is normal or typical," said
Carlson. "Thus, under this latest advance toward a Brave New World
of polymorphous perversion, California textbooks will no longer be
able to use words like 'mother and father' and 'husband and wife,'
because they suggest that heterosexuality is the norm - even though
that is manifestly the case, even in California."
The organization's statement called it "unbelievable" that teachers and students who oppose same-sex marriage and suggest homosexuality isn't innate, or disapprove of cross-dressing and sex-change operations, could be disciplined as "harassers," and students may use the restrooms
designated for the gender with which they identify.
Karen England, chief of CRI, [said] that the law is not a list of banned words, including "mom" and "dad." But she said the requirement is that the law bans discriminatory bias and the effect will be to ban such terminology. "Having 'mom' and 'dad' promotes a discriminatory bias. You have to either get rid of 'mom' and 'dad' or include everything when talking about [parental issues]," she said. "They [promoters of sexual alternative lifestyles] do consider that discriminatory."
Can you not hear Folly calling out? 'Let all who are simple come in here!' she says to those who lack judgment. But little do they know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of the grave.'
